Creating Homegrown Graded Readers in Thailand: Workshop Highlights

Last year I had the pleasure of co-leading the first of two workshops in Thailand which focused on creating homegrown graded readers.

Most people carry a story inside them. The challenge is to find a way to turn an idea into a story that can be shared and enjoyed by others.

The project was important. At the time, there were no graded readers in English about Thailand written by Thai authors. The aim of the workshop was to help Thai or Thai-based educators to develop stories rooted in their own culture.

This video captures some of the atmosphere of the first workshop where participants began exploring ideas and developing their writing.

The most rewarding part came later. By the end of the second workshop, around twenty stories had been written. Real stories ready to be published and shared with language learners.

For me that is the real value of projects like this. Helping people to find the confidence and skills to tell stories that only they can tell.
